I’m Vihaan Bhardwaj, a rising high school junior and emerging scholar at the intersection of health economics, mental health policy, and youth advocacy. My work is driven by a commitment to systems-level change, and is informed by research, shaped by lived experience, and articulated through public discourse.
As a member of the California Partners Project’s Youth Advisory Committee, I collaborate with youth advocates to design and present research on youth mental health to statewide leaders, including California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the Governor's Advisory Council on Physical Health and Mental Well-Being. Additionally, our committee has spoken with industry leaders such as Meta's Global Director of Youth Policy to both gain and provide insight. In my role as Vice Chair of SWEAR — the district-wide mental health organization of California's second largest school district — I help shape district initiatives in partnership with San Diego Unified leadership and other partner organizations. This work has included delivering remarks at County press conferences on suing Big Tech and presenting to over 180 district-employed mental health professionals on student-informed approaches to well-being.
I am also the co-founder of the Eudaimonia initiative, an award-winning platform that distills the voices of high school students into preventative mental health guidance for parents of younger children. This project reflects my broader interest in leveraging the inherent power in the youth lived experience and, having started by supporting parents at our local elementary & middle school, we are now increasing the scale of our initiative in partnership with student leaders across the district.
Academically, I pursue advanced coursework in abstract mathematics, economics, and the social sciences as a dual-enrolled student at San Diego Mesa College. I am also being mentored by a Harvard PhD student (Joseph Hnath) with whom I am collaborating on a research project exploring the intersection of discrimination, social support, and mental health outcomes using econometric methods. I will be presenting our work at the 2025 American Society of Health Economists Conference as its youngest participant.
Across these spaces, I strive to bridge policy design with community needs, empirical evidence with lived experience, and youth insight with both institutional decisions and broader community dialogue.
Beyond research, I am a part of San Diego Mesa’s intercollegiate speech and debate team, where I’ve competed in Parliamentary Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Persuasive Speech. In my first year, I have placed at the Open Bronze and Silver level several times at regional competitions with competitors from 40+ universities. I was recently selected to compete internationally at the 2025 IFA Tournament in Incheon, South Korea. I also tutor peers in AP Calculus and Biology (currently TA for AP Biology), and have earned certification in professional tutoring through Thinkist.
Lastly, in parallel with my academic and advocacy work, I am privileged to have the opportunity to study and perform ancient Indian classical art forms including Kathak, tabla, sitar, and Hindustani vocal music — traditions that ground me in rhythm, discipline, and cultural continuity.
